The Double Twisted Bun
For your next party, this hairstyle is a cool twist on the classic single bun. Start by adding a smoothing product to hair that’s not super clean (there won’t be as many flyaways!) My favourite is Osis+ Magic Anti-Frizz Shine Serum by Schwarzkopf. It’s sheer and lightweight but holds everything down really well. Brush hair smooth, tying it back into two low ponies at the nape of your neck. Use clear elastics or something that matches your hair colour. Twist each pony around itself then secure with bobby pins. Finish with a shine or hairspray like Goldwell’s Straight Diamond Gloss.
The Low Textured Pony
Low ponies are great for someone with long hair and make hair look even longer! Start by applying a heat protector. I like KMS Free Shape 2-in-1 Styling & Finishing Spray. Then using a wand add some loose waves. Let the hair cool off then brush fingers through to mess up the curls. Tie in a low ponytail then break up the curls again. Spray a second time then taking a piece of hair wrap it around the elastic and bobby pin underneath.
The High Textured Pony
This pony looks beautiful when it’s a bit messy. It doesn’t have to be perfect! People these days don’t want every single piece of hair in place, they like more of a textured look. Higher ponies can really make your hair appear longer! This is similar to the low pony, but you’re taking some pieces from the top and pulling it away from the elastic so it’s not so textured. Set the look with the KMS Free Shape finishing spray.
Half-Up Half-Down Hair
This is great hairstyle if you’re in a rush because it’s so easy. It’s also perfect for those parties when you’re wearing something low cut and you want a bit of hair over your shoulder. If you don’t have texture already, use a wand to create some loose waves. Do a half ponytail, keeping it loose off the head. Take pieces from each side, from the top of the ear and pull it into a ponytail. Make a gap above the ponytail then pull the pony through to make the twist. Then take a small piece from the back of the pony and wrap it around the elastic, secure with bobby and spray with Style Sign Magic Finish Brilliance Boosting Hairspray by Goldwell. I like it because it’s not too sticky.
The Crimped French Braid
Crimping is back, baby! If you crimp a few pieces underneath fine hair it adds extra volume. I often crimp pieces of my own hair. People really notice because it looks like you have feathers in your hair. For something with even more oomph, try French braiding medium length hair, then pull it apart a little so it loosens. Half way down, bobby pin underneath then tease it a bit where the braid stops. Crimp the loose hair at the bottom, then spray all over with a dry wax to give it a messy texture. I like using KMS Hairplay because it’s great for hold and you can place each hair where you want it.
The Inverted French Braid Pony
Start by spraying your hair with the KMS Free Shape 2-in-1 Styling & Finishing Spray. Then crimp random pieces to give hair some texture. This will make your braid look bigger. To get an inverted braid, braid over and under instead of under and over. Do this half way down your crown then pull all your hair into a pony and secure with an elastic. Take a piece and wrap around to hide the elastic and bobby pin. If you want a really volumized look, crimp more pieces of the pony followed by dry wax or hair spray. Then fluff it up with your fingers to make it messy. Make the hair the focal point of your look by pairing it with a sleek and simple outfit. Check out more beautiful braids!
The Double Pony
For a really long and dramatic ‘do, try the double pony! This is basically a high pony with another one underneath to add length. Start by taking hair from the tops of the ear and securing with an elastic. Then take the rest of hair from the bottom, about an inch below the top pony and make another one. Secure that. You can add waves with a curling iron or keep it slick and straight.
Add Some Colour
Whether you’re wearing it up or down, adding some colour to your hair will really make it pop. Schwarzkopf BlondMe Instant Blush colours give hair a pastel hue that washes out in one shampoo. It comes in four pretty pale shades including lavender, green, blue and pink. Start with freshly washed damp hair, spray the colour wherever you want it then blow dry and style. Don’t forget to use the gloves so it doesn’t stain your hands!
How Can I Make Sure My Updo Stays UP?
For any kind of updo you’ll need texture so it will hold. That means starting with hair that’s not freshly washed. But if your hair is too dirty use a dry shampoo to take some of the oil away from your roots without having to wash. My go-to is Osis+ Refresh Dust Bodifying Dry Shampoo Spray from Schwarzkopf. Also, invest in good quality elastics, not the dollar store kind! For extra hold, you can use two elastics instead of one and for high ponies, add bobby pins so your style will stay in place into the wee hours.
