How To Maintain Your Hairstyle At Home
We hope everyone is keeping safe and healthy during these difficult times. With so many people staying home, we put together a few tips to help you maintain your hairstyle until bob + paige re-opens. We’re also thrilled to announce that we now have an online store!
Protect Your Hair From Heat Damage
If you only do one thing for your hair between appointments, it should be this. Daily use of your flat iron, hair dryer, and other styling tools are the primary source of hair damage for many of us. While these tools make for fabulous hairstyles, they also strip the natural moisture from our hair follicles and leave them vulnerable. So, even though your hot tools might go up to 450°F, don’t crank it higher than 300°F (especially for colour-treated hair).
It’s also wise to invest in a high-quality heat protectant. Stylist Alisha Leela recommends Goldwell’s Sleek Perfection Thermal Spray Serum because “it works well on both wet or dry, straight, or curly.”
Leela also loves Oribe’s Balm d’Or Heat Styling Shield. “It’s a creamier serum so it adds the moisture you’ll need if your hair is especially dry, lightened or coarse. Plus, I really like the smell!”
Indulge in At-Home Hair Masks
Got extra time on your hands? Pamper yourself with an at-home spa day. We recommend using a hair mask treatment once a week to deep condition your tresses.
Your hair goes through a lot every day to keep you looking good, including chemicals in products, hot tools, changes in weather, and friction from hats/scarves. To combat these daily stressors, you can use a hair mask like Goldwell’s Kerasilk Control Smooth Mask for smoother, shinier, nourished hair. Of course, you can always contact us through Facebook or Instagram for a recommendation that works best for your natural hair type.
Tame Frizz & Flyaways
One of the easiest ways to maintain your hairstyle without actually making the trip out to the salon is to tame flyaways and frizzy hair. Especially with hotter weather approaching. Everyone with textured or curly hair knows that the extra humidity in the air causes more frizz.
Master Stylist Joey Marchese recommends OSIS Miracle 15 Styling Balm or natural hair textures. “Scrunch this balm into your curls after a quick blow dry. It contains moisture properties to help keep frizz at bay. It’s also a great primer that adds shine, and it’s weightless so you enjoy the benefits without weighing your hair down.”
Make Your Colour Last with Colour-Safe Products
The best way to ensure your tone stays vibrant for longer? Keep hair hydrated with colour-safe shampoos and conditioners. You’ll want to check the ingredient list and avoid any products that contain harsh ingredients like sulphates, parabens, phthalates, or sodium chlorine.
Not sure about what products are safe for your hair? Send us a message on Instagram or Facebook! Our team can ease your fears about whether certain products on the market are worth the money, or even recommend a substitute from the high-quality products we carry at the salon (and are currently selling on our new online shop!)
How to REALLY Blow Dry Your Hair
Minimize Sun Damage by Wearing a Hat
With sunnier days fast approaching, hats are an often overlooked strategy to maintaining your colour between appointments. Extended exposure to sunlight will make your colour fade faster. So, if you plan to go out for long walks or head out into nature, be sure to wear a hat to minimize damage.
For many people, warmer weather also inevitably means a dip in the pool. Unfortunately, chlorinated water can dry out the healthiest of hair and wreak havoc on your colour. To combat this, you can massage a bit of leave-in conditioner into your hair for added protection before diving in.
Grow Out Your Fringe
Anyone with bangs know that they require a lot of trims to keep them the right length. DYI-ing your own is not the best idea. It takes skill to do this and we don’t recommend you try it at home. Instead of constantly brushing them out of your eyes, embrace the side sweep or curtain bangs. Or some pretty hair clips to keep hair off your face.
4 Ways to Beautiful Summer Hair
Touch Up Your Roots
If you’ve been rigorous about keeping your roots out of site, a big lag between appointments will definitely be an adjustment. There are a lot of temporary root touch up products on the market but the drugstore kinds are often like spray paint, not great for your hair and the results can be hit or miss. (literally!).
At bob + paige we prefer sprays or sponges over brushes. Goldwell makes a good powder called Dualsenses Color Revive that you dab it on your hairline. We carry it in the salon and have seen a lot of success with it. Oribe makes a great product called Airbrush Root Touch-Up Spray which works like a dry shampoo with pigment.
In a pinch, blondes can also use white dry shampoos on their hairline which will make your hair feel great and keep it looking good for longer between washes (admit it, you’re probably washing less anyway!)

Stay Away From Pre-Mixed “Kits”!
Some salons are offering pre-mixed formulas for clients but bob + paige’s Top Stylist and co-owner Frank Calandrino doesn’t recommend them because they are strong and unpredictable. “The results could be disastrous if you don’t know what you’re doing. In the salon I would never mix your colour, walk away for 40 min, and then apply it. The colour oxidizes and weakens over time”.
Hairstyling Tools Your Need To Own
Experiment With Your Style
If you’re going to maintain your hairstyle for a lengthy chunk of time, it’s a good idea to invest in some really good tools like quality blow dryer, or flatiron. Then check out some online hair tutorials and play around. Let your hair air dry and see what happens or try using a diffuser for a textured look. This is a great time to practice some styling techniques you’ve never had the chance to try before.
If your hair is short and you’re not comfortable with clippers, you may just want to leave it to grow long or shave it all off. We’re going to be seeing a lot of new looks when our clients all come into the salon!
If you need to reach us, send us a message through Facebook or Instagram. We look forward to seeing all our clients soon! Until then, stay safe and be well.
