Looking to switch up your hairstyle for summer? From textured bobs to modern 80’s hair, Master Stylist Joey Marchese shares his top looks for the season.
The Cropped Bob
I’ve been doing a lot of cropped bobs in the salon lately and it’s a fantastic look for summer! If you already have above-the-shoulder tresses and you find yourself itching to spruce it up with something a little more funky, the cropped bob will make a fine choice.
This style is well known for being really short and airy with a lot of texture, and an “undone” look in terms of styling. A cropped bob sits between the jaw and the earlobe, and can be worn with or without a fringe. The benefit here is that it looks truly gorgeous on a variety of hair textures! Style this cut with a light wanding, creating a bend in the hair rather than a wave — in other words, don’t concern yourself with having it look too “perfect.”
Texture!
I call this the ‘athleisure’ version of perfect waves. It’s a great choice for anyone whose hair isn’t completely straight, flat and smooth — absolutely perfect for naturally curly girls! This textured style plays up movement in the natural waves and bends found in a woman’s hair. Instead of looking like you intentionally spent time on perfectly curated curls, this style has you looking like you woke up like this (flawless!).
I like using a wand to give the hair a kink here and there. I also love to work with natural texture using Miracle 15 Styling Balm by Osis to tame frizz and flyaways. Try scrunching this balm into your curls after a quick blow dry — you can go over it with a hot tool because it has heat protectant built in, and the balm contains moisture properties to help keep frizz at bay. It’s a great primer that also adds shine, and it’s weightless so you enjoy the benefits without weighing your hair down.
I don’t use hair sprays much in the summer. Spray is ideal for a polished look, but it’s known for making hair too crunchy — and you want to be able to run your hands through your hair at this time of year! I’m more into finishers right now, which give you that carefree, summer texture we all love. You can definitely use the Miracle 15 balm as a finisher!
BIG Hair
I like big hair! This trend is going to be huge for summer (literally). Whether it’s blowdried for an event or just hanging out by the beach… bigger is better! This dramatic look, together with the boxy jacket looks women are wearing nowadays, makes for a modernized spin on the iconic 80’s version.
Have fun with hot rollers and a big blow dry to achieve this look. I use Osis Thrill with a slightly shinier finish to give structure and hold without overburdening the hair. This product coaxes the curls into their natural shape and texture, but with more hold and grit. It results in a look that’s both a little bit undone with a whole lot of volume.
I also recommend drying hair with a soft diffuser bag. They’re easy to travel with and you aren’t fussing with a hard plastic diffuser in your hair. We sell soft diffuser bags by Diane here at bob + paige.

Pops of Colour!
Bright pops of colour — but not perfect colour — are a big trend for summer! Aim for edgier, natural tones that pop, because they’ll add an element of fun and coolness to your look. You can take a naturally wavy look and make it look even cooler (the colours I recommend will usually depend on client’s skin tone).
Personally, I prefer chunky block colouring over the melted look; that is, I like random placements of colour wherever the client’s hair needs it instead of overly structured colour placement. A lot of the colours I’m seeing almost look like people painted it themselves! I’ve been working a lot with yellows, purples, blues… but we’re also seeing a lot of coppers and contrasting tones.
As these are fantasy colours, they’re somewhat difficult to maintain. Whatever you choose, you’ll need to be careful in the sun and wear a hat! Or at the very least, consider getting this colour pop look done after your beach vacation so it won’t immediately fade.
More Tips for Great Summer Hair:
- Trim your hair just a bit. Your hair will be exposed to a lot of sun and water (AKA experiencing damage), so it’s best to get an inch or so taken off the ends to freshen up at the start of the season.
- Take a more effortless approach to your look. In the summer, you can look the way you want without having to invest too much effort. Working with (instead of fighting against) your natural texture is great.
- Instead of blow drying with a nozzle tool, try a diffuser. With the summer heat approaching, you won’t want to live under the hot hair dryer and a diffuser isn’t as hot.
- Switch up your products! Osis Magic Anti-Frizz is great for those warmer months. You can run it through your damp hair before a blow dry, or use it as a finisher on your ends for smooth tresses and reduced flyaways.
